CPEV & CPEP Recertification FAQs

  • How often do I need to recertify as a CPEV or CPEP?

Certification must be renewed annually by completing four hours of approved CAETA continuing education (CE) before the one-year anniversary of your certification.

  • What are the continuing education (CE) requirements for recertification?

You must complete four hours of approved CAETA CE through this webpage. Only courses found here are eligible to fulfill your requirements.. Please note that free webinars from CAETA or Lap of Love do not qualify toward recertification.

  • Is there a fee to renew my certification?

There is no separate renewal fee; you are only responsible for the cost of the four required CE hours. CAETA graduates receive an exclusive 50% discount on all approved courses (excluding the End-of-Life Communication Workshop, which is already discounted at $30 per credit hour). With this discount, recertification typically costs between $50 and $120, depending on course selection. This exclusive code can be found in your Resource Library or you can request it by emailing [email protected].

  • What happens if my certification expires before I renew?

If your certification expires, please email [email protected] to discuss renewal options.

  • How do I submit proof of CE credits for renewal?

No submission is required! When you complete approved courses through the CAETA learning platform, your CE hours are automatically tracked.

  • I became a CPEP through my veterinary school. Now that I’ve graduated, how do I become a CPEV and/or maintain certification?

If you were certified as a CPEP during veterinary or technician school, you’ll be invited to retake the CPEP exam (or the CPEV exam for new DVMs) after graduation to restart your annual certification cycle. If you haven’t received this invitation via email, please contact us at [email protected]. Your certification remains valid for one year after graduation. To maintain it beyond that, you’ll need to complete four hours of approved CAETA CE courses annually.
